Is osteopathy covered by insurance in Ontario?

Eric Johnson Eric Johnson · January 10, 2023 · 5 min read

It is one of the most practical questions we get, and a fair one, since nobody wants a surprise at checkout. Here is a straight answer about osteopathy and insurance in Ontario.

The short answer: osteopathic manual therapy is not covered by OHIP, but it is commonly reimbursed through extended health benefit plans, the kind you often get through work. Whether yours covers it, and how much, depends on your specific plan.

What to check in your plan

Coverage varies between insurers and even between plans from the same insurer. Before booking, it helps to check a few things:

  • Look for "osteopathy" specifically in your paramedical or extended health benefits. It is often listed separately from physiotherapy and massage, each with its own annual limit.
  • Check the annual maximum. Many plans give a set dollar amount per year for osteopathy.
  • Check the practitioner requirement. Many insurers reimburse osteopathic manual therapy only when the practitioner belongs to a recognised professional association. It is worth confirming this detail.
  • Ask about a referral. Most plans do not require one, but a few do for reimbursement.

How claiming usually works

In most cases you pay at the clinic and submit a receipt to your insurer for reimbursement. Your receipt should include the practitioner's name and professional designation, the date, and the amount. We are always happy to provide a proper receipt you can submit. Some plans also support direct billing, so it is worth asking us and your insurer.

Health spending accounts

If you have a Health Spending Account or a wellness or lifestyle account through your employer, osteopathy and other wellness services can often be paid from it, sometimes even when your regular plan limit runs out. It is a commonly overlooked pool of funds worth checking.

A quick, reliable way to be sure

Plans differ enough that the safest approach is a two-minute call to your insurer, or a look at your benefits booklet, before your first visit. Ask: "Do I have coverage for osteopathy, what is my annual maximum, and do you require the practitioner to belong to an association?" That covers almost everything.

The short version

  • Not covered by OHIP, but commonly covered by extended health plans.
  • Look for "osteopathy" specifically, and check your annual maximum.
  • Some insurers require association membership; confirm this.
  • Health spending accounts are a great backup source of funds.
