What to expect at your first visit

Eric Johnson Eric Johnson · January 16, 2024 · 4 min read

If you have never been to an osteopath before, a little uncertainty is completely normal. Knowing what happens takes the mystery out of it, so here is exactly what your first visit to our downtown Hespeler clinic looks like.

Before you arrive

You book online in a couple of minutes, and if you are not sure osteopathy is right for you, you can start with a free 10-minute consult instead. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in. Bring along any relevant details, such as a diagnosis, scan result, or medication list, if you have them, though none of these are required.

The conversation

Your appointment starts with a proper conversation. Your practitioner will ask about what brought you in, how long it has been going on, your general health, and what you are hoping to get back to. This is not a formality. The story of your symptoms often points to the cause, so it is worth being open and specific.

The assessment

Next comes a hands-on assessment. Your practitioner will look at how you move, stand and bend, and use their hands to feel for areas of restriction and tension. This is how we build a picture of what is really driving your symptoms, which is often not where you feel the pain. Read more about the approach on our osteopathy page.

Treatment

In most cases, treatment happens in the same first visit. Techniques are gentle and tailored to you, and your practitioner will explain what they are doing as they go. Nothing happens without your understanding and comfort, and you can ask questions or say stop at any point.

You will leave understanding your body better. Patients tell us this is their favourite part. You will not just be treated, you will understand what is going on and what you can do about it.

After your visit

You will usually leave with a couple of simple things to do at home and a clear, honest picture of what to expect next, including a realistic sense of how many visits might help. Some people feel lighter straightaway; others notice change over the following days. Both are normal.

The practical bits

  • Where we are: 8 Queen Street East, in the heart of downtown Hespeler, with parking nearby.
  • Payment and receipts: we provide a receipt you can submit to your insurer. See our guide to osteopathy and insurance in Ontario.
  • How long: allow a little extra time for your first visit, since the conversation and assessment take a bit longer than follow-ups.

The short version

  • Wear comfy clothes and bring any relevant health details.
  • Expect a real conversation, a hands-on assessment, and usually treatment on day one.
  • You will leave with home advice and an honest plan.
  • Unsure? Start with a free 10-minute consult.
